TGL, the new golf league from Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy has gotten a new launch date. The tech-infused league was supposed to launch earlier this year but had to be postponed indefinitely after issues with the venue. Now, it’s been revealed that the league will launch with its first match on January 7, 2025.
The new league, in partnership with the PGA Tour, already has some big names attached to it, including Matt Fitzpatrick, Collin Morikawa, and Xander Schaffuele. Woods and McIlroy will also be competing players in the league.
It will feature six teams made up of four players each. There will be 15 regular season matches that will be held between January 7 and March 4, 2025. After that, there would be four team semifinals before a best-of-three final round to decide the winner of the SoFi Cup. The entire season will run for three months.
According to Mike McCarley, CEO and founder of TMRW Sports, one of the groups behind the new league, the TGL season “will complement the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Season with a fast-paced team competition that aims to captivate a wide range of sports fans with elements, like a shot clock, that are familiar to fans of other sports.”
The six teams that will participate in the league are New York GC(Matt Fitzpatrick, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Cameron Young), The Bay GC(Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Min Woo Lee, Shane Lowry), Jupiter Links GC(Tiger Woods, Max Homa, Tom Kim, Kevin Kisner), Atlanta Drive GC(Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Billy Horschel, Lucas Glover), Los Angeles GC (Collin Morikawa, Sahith Theegala, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood), and Boston Common GC(Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott), with New York GC vs. The Bay GC being the first match of the season.
Other things to note about the new league include the following: most matches will be played on Mondays and Tuesdays, lasting about two hours, so as not to clash with other events that will be held on weekends. This will allow players attached to the new league to carry on with their regular Tour season like normal.
