Manchester United Secures Champions League Spot: A Trophy-like Achievement, Says Erik ten Hag

After a resounding 4-1 victory over Chelsea, Manchester United sealed their place in the Champions League, prompting manager Erik ten Hag to describe it as “something like” winning a trophy. The Dutchman’s team now sits comfortably in third place, two points ahead of Newcastle, as they prepare for their final league game against Fulham at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag’s Agreement with Wenger:
When Arsène Wenger, the former Arsenal manager, previously stated that a top-four finish was equivalent to claiming silverware, Ten Hag was asked for his opinion on the matter. Reflecting on the toughness of the Premier League, he replied, “I think in the Premier League, yeah, something like that. Due to the Premier League’s toughness… It’s massive when you get it done. We’re still not where we want to be, but we’re back in the Champions League, and I think that was a really important step.”

Although the win was a cause for celebration, Ten Hag had one concern regarding an injury suffered by Antony, who was carried off the field with a potential ankle problem during the first half. Additionally, Luke Shaw was substituted at halftime due to unknown reasons. Speaking about Antony’s injury, the manager stated, “I don’t know. Everyone has seen him come off… It’s serious, but we have to wait a minimum of 24 hours and then we know probably more.”

Should Manchester City be defeated in the upcoming FA Cup final on June 3, Manchester United could claim their second trophy of the season while denying their rivals a chance at a treble. Looking ahead, Ten Hag expressed the team’s determination, saying, “Next week [the final] is going to be big, and we will do everything in our power… then we’ll work in the background for next season.”

Marcus Rashford’s goal against Chelsea marked his 30th of the season, and Ten Hag voiced his confidence in the player’s contract renewal. “We’re working on that. I have a good feeling about that. Marcus wants to stay, we want him to stay,” he affirmed.

Chelsea, who can finish no higher than 11th in the league, faced a disappointing year according to manager Frank Lampard. He acknowledged the need for improvement and emphasized the importance of rebuilding the squad during the summer transfer window, as the club looks to move forward.

Manchester United’s achievement in securing a Champions League spot is seen as a significant milestone by manager Erik ten Hag, considering the competitiveness and difficulty of the Premier League. With their focus now turning to the upcoming FA Cup final, United aims to add another trophy to their season. Meanwhile, Chelsea faces the task of rebuilding their squad to bounce back from a challenging campaign.
