Sinner wins Miami Open title

World number two, Jannik Sinner has claimed his third title of the year after beating Grigor Dimitrov in straight-sets to win the Miami Open title. Sinner, who won his first grand slam at the Australian Open earlier this year, kept his cool while beating Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1 in an exquisite performance.

This victory marks Sinner’s third title of 2024, adding to his triumphs in Melbourne and Rotterdam. The 22-year-old’s incredible form sees him with just one loss this season. He has now risen to world number two, the highest ranking of his career so far.

Spelling on his achievement, Sinner expressed his satisfaction with the week’s events, pointing out the varied challenges he faced on the court. He emphasized his focus on executing his game plan, attributing his success to maintaining that strategy throughout the tournament: “I was full of energy today. I’m very happy to be number two in the world. It is just a number; for me, most important is trying to execute my gameplan, and I managed to do this.”

By surpassing Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner becomes the first Italian to reach the top two in the ATP rankings since their inception in 1973, which is one of the many records he has attained since this season.

Dimitrov, despite falling short in the final, expressed pride in his performance, stating that he felt like a winner despite the outcome. His impressive run to the final sees him returning to the top 10 rankings for the first time since 2018.

Despite a strong start from Dimitrov, Sinner thwarted his opponent’s attempts and seized control of the match. Sinner’s resilience was evident as he saved break points and capitalized on crucial opportunities to secure victory.

Over at the women’s side, Danielle Collins clinched the title with a convincing 7-5, 6-3 win over Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina to win her first title since 2021 and her third career title overall. The victory also made her the first unseeded woman to win the event since 2005, and Collins expressed joy after receiving support from people at the venue. This also makes it the second final in a row where Rybakina has lost.
