Medvedev wins first clay court title

In an exhilarating final at the Italian Open, Daniil Medvedev emerged victorious, claiming the first clay-court title of his career. The Russian tennis player defeated Denmark’s Holger Rune with a score of 7-5, 7-5, solidifying his position as a top contender for the upcoming French Open, set to begin on May 28.

Historically renowned for his dominance on hard courts, Medvedev’s triumph on clay is a notable achievement. Out of his previous 19 titles, 18 were earned on hard surfaces, with the remaining one on grass in Mallorca.

Expressing his initial skepticism, Medvedev admitted, “Honestly, I didn’t believe I could win a Masters 1000 on clay in my career because I usually disliked it. Playing on clay didn’t feel comfortable for me, and nothing seemed to work.”

However, his perspective began to change leading up to the Italian Open. “Before this tournament, during my time in Madrid and Monte Carlo, I started feeling more confident. I managed to keep my composure and didn’t experience any major frustrations,” Medvedev explained. “When I arrived here, something just clicked, and I felt incredible during practice. I couldn’t explain it, but I knew I had to see how it would unfold.”

Overcoming formidable opponents became the ultimate test for Medvedev. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I’m really thrilled that I succeeded in proving myself and everyone else that I am capable of performing on clay.”

The final match, delayed due to rain, showcased Medvedev’s prowess. Breaking in the 12th game of the first set, he capitalized on a weak drop shot from Rune, securing the set. Rune, the youngest finalist at the Foro Italico since Rafael Nadal 17 years ago, exhibited resilience by breaking Medvedev’s serve early in the second set. However, the Russian player demonstrated unwavering determination, regaining control and ultimately claiming victory.

Addressing his surprise at the outcome, Medvedev turned to his team during the trophy presentation and said, “Who would have thought that I would be standing here? Honestly, I didn’t. I’m not sure about you guys, but I genuinely didn’t anticipate this moment. Yet, it has become a reality.”
