It was a historic moment for German tennis star Alexander Zverev who defeated Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-1 in the finals of the Tokyo Olympics tennis Men’s SIngles event to win the Gold medal. The young German was speechless during his post-match interview as he could not believe that he had achieved the feat.
Zverev’s biggest test was against World No. 1 and tournament favourite Novak Djokovic. The German emerged as a shock winner in a stunning three-set match. After winning that match he was superb against Khachanov in the finals as he never allowed his opponent to settle. He broke him twice in both sets to finish the game in little more than an hour.
The 23-year-old struck Gold on his first appearance at the Olympics and claimed it to be the highlight of his career till now and also revealed his desire to win for a long time.
“This is the greatest thing I have ever won,” Zverev said. “I have always wanted to achieve this, and now I see myself here, with a gold medal hanging from my neck. What I am feeling right now is something I cannot describe.”
Zverev defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili in the third round and then got the better of France’s Jeremy Chardy in the quarterfinals. His biggest challenge was always going through Djokovic who is in sublime form. The youngster even lost the first set 1-6 emphatically and not many people gave him hope to make a comeback from there. But he fought his way back in the next two sets to end the Serb’s hopes of a Calendar Golden Slam. He continued his form in the final as well and never allowed Khachanov to stand any chance of winning the game and clinching the Gold medal.
“I would say the last four sets I have played here have been quite good,” Zverev said. “Right now I would dare to say there are few people who are happier than I am. I have a golden thing on my neck that is nothing like the chains I usually wear it. It (gold medal) has been very difficult to get it, but very satisfying. I will not take it off until I get home.”
