The New England Patriots are not expected to sign free agent quarterback Jameis Winston.
Mike Giardi of the NFL Network reported that the Patriots will probably not add Winston. Tom Brady recently left the Patriots after 20 years with them and he is now the new quarterback for Winston’s former team, the Buccaneers.
“The Patriots are “unlikely” to target the former Buccaneers QB, whom Brady is replacing in Florida, to replace TB12, NFL Network’s Mike Giardi reported Friday, per a high-ranking New England official,” wrote Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com.
Winston completed 380 of 626 passes for 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns in 16 games but there’s very little free agency interest in him because he threw 30 interceptions to lead the NFL in that category.
As mentioned by Bergman, no team is really showing any interest in Winston:
“The Patriots are not in a rush to find him, and nearly 48 hours into free agency, no team is in a rush to lock up Winston, as its next starter or otherwise.”
Winston became just the eighth quarterback in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards in a single season but his high turnover numbers scare off teams. The 26-year-old is also the only player in NFL history to throw at least 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in a single season.
The Buccaneers moved on from him after his rookie contract expired and now the former Heisman Trophy winner has to find a new home. It seems that his search will take him a long time and he might have to accept a backup role somewhere.
