Former world number one Tiger Woods has confirmed he will be taking a mini break before returning to action in time for the first FedEx Cup play-off event next month. With all four Majors done and dusted, attention on the PGA Tour now turns towards the FedEx Cup and the 16-time major champion is looking to make a serious run for the coveted prize.
In changes to the schedule, the FedEx Cup has been reduced from four events to three, starting with the Northern Trust Open on August 8, while the season will end a month earlier. The tweaks were largely made to ensure the end-of-season run in was completed before the NFL campaign started, giving as much coverage as possible to one of the biggest events in golf.
Woods has had a limited playing schedule this year, taking part in just 10 tournaments, and his last appearance ended in a missed cut at The 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
Several of the world’s best golfers have decided to play in the St. Jude Classic this week but the 16-time major champion has opted for more rest after his poor outing in Northern Ireland.
“I’m going to take a couple of weeks off and get ready for the playoffs,” Woods told ESPN. “We’ve got the playoffs coming up, and anything can happen. Last year I almost stole the whole FedEx Cup at the very end. “If it wasn’t for [Justin Rose’s] little break there at the bunker, it could have been interesting. So [I’ll] get ready for those events. And after that then have a break.”
