England’s Justin Rose says he will work on his game and try to learn from his mistakes following his disappointing finish at the US Open at Pebble Beach.
The 2013 US Open champion was in contention during Sunday’s final round but failed to stay with Brooks Koepka and eventual winner Gary Woodland. Rose started the last day one shot behind Woodland and was joint leader after a birdie at the first in California.
However, his long game was below par and he had to settle for a share of third in the end. Rose will now get a few weeks to regroup before the final major of the season, the Open Championship.
He has enjoyed a solid campaign so far, winning the Farmers Insurance Open, while finishing in the top ten at The Players Championship, WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and Wells Fargo Championship.
Despite tailing off, Rose says there is plenty to be positive about going forward.
“It doesn’t hurt,” said Rose. “You reflect and go, ‘How can I get better?’ “It hurts if you lose at the death and you make a mistake.
The way it happened for me, I’m more proud of the fact I even gave myself a chance. I didn’t have my A-game this week.
“And to contend in a major with no game, I take the positive. I felt good within myself in the situation, just you need to be really on point and I just gave away a couple of cheap bogeys.
“I felt like my focus didn’t click in around the turn. Once the momentum left me, I had to rebuild and reset.”
Koepka remains 8.50 favourite to win at Royal Portrush, while Rose is available at odds of 15.00.
