FC Barcelona have switched managerial roles among their club legends. Ronaldo Koeman’s dismissal saw their legendary midfielder Xavi Hernandez take up that role at the Camp Nou. The former midfield maestro reveal that he got a ‘good luck’ message from former teammate Lionel Messi as he took up the reins at Camp Nou.
It will be a tough job for the Spaniard as Barcelona are in complete disarray, both on and off the field. They need to know the purpose for their fight once again something which Xavi will make them remember that time and again through the season. The Blaugrana are ninth in the La Liga points table and taking them up to the Champions League spots will be his first target and then considering the position he may challenge for the title later.
Xavi has come to Barcelona call after terminating his contract at Al Sadd in Qatar. He has been a loyal servant of the club for many years and once again he has come to Camp Nou to provide stability and to take the club to safer shores.
The former midfielder has revealed that he got a text from Messi on his appointment but does not regret the chance of managing the five time Ballon d’Or winner. When asked whether he would have liked to manage Messi, Xavi said, “Messi, [Samuel] Eto’o, Ronaldinho, of course, but they are not here. Messi is a great friend, he text me good luck. But we cannot think about the players that are not here.”
Despite being excited on his unveiling as the new Barcelona manager, Xavi is well aware of the situation at the club and assures that fans that he will guide the Cules to safety. “I was really emotional to see all the fans today and we have to give them back good football, work seriously and with our values,” he added.
Xavi was quizzed whether his style of play is similar to that of Pep Guardiola, which he played down. He wants Barcelona to play good football and win games, something that they need desperately this season.
“I understand the pressure, I’m at the best club in the world. Expectations are great, we have to work hard to win many trophies,” Xavi concluded.
