Wolves confirmed in an official statement the club will be parting ways with manager Nuno Espirito Santo after four seasons leading the club. He had previously signed a new three-year deal in September 2020, but will leave by ‘mutual agreement.’
The 47-year-old Portuguese is not currently linked to any other manager openings, but leaves after taking Wolves back up to the Premier League and reaching the Europa League quarter-finals in 2020.
“Nuno has brought us some incredibly special moments at Wolves that will never be forgotten, but every chapter comes to an end,” Wolves executive chairman Jeff Shi said in a statement. “His loyalty and dedication over the last four years has been immeasurable, and we cannot thank him enough for the progress he has made for Wolves.”
Prior to joining the club four years back, Nuno was previously with Valencia and Porto.
“Since the first day we arrived at Compton, our ambition was to make a positive change and push this football club forward, and I am proud to say that we did that every single day,” Nuno said. “We achieved our goals, we did it with passion and we did it together.”
The team reaching the Europa League quarters in 2020 was easily the biggest highlight of Nuno’s stint with the club.
They ultimately lost 1-0 to Sevilla who were the eventual tournament winners.
“Firstly, I want to thank the supporters, who have all played such an important part in helping us reach new heights for Wolves, and the people of the city, who embraced us and made us feel at home,” Nuno added.
Wolves wrap up this season on Sunday, 23 May vs Manchester United.
“Sunday was already going to be a very special day, welcoming our supporters back for the first time in more than a year; but it will also now be a fitting goodbye for someone who will forever remain an important part of Wolves history,” Jeff Shi added.
