William Saliba: Arsenal’s Defensive Maestro on the Rise

At just 22 years old, William Saliba is not only making waves but creating a tidal force in Arsenal’s defense, marking a season that solidifies his place among the world’s elite defenders. The journey from a shy start with the Gunners to a key role in the club’s success has been nothing short of remarkable for the talented center-back.

Saliba is not one to shy away from setting ambitious targets. While his immediate goal is to help Arsenal clinch the title, his long-term aspiration is nothing short of becoming the world’s best center-back. His current trajectory, marked by composure and physical prowess, suggests that this lofty ambition may not be too far from reality.

“We are all competitors. I play in one of the best teams in the world, so, of course, my dream is to become the best defender in the world,” remarks Saliba. His admiration for defensive stalwart Virgil van Dijk is evident, and he acknowledges the continuous learning process, aiming to become a role model for aspiring defenders.

Saliba has seamlessly integrated himself as a mainstay in Arsenal’s defense, garnering 12 caps for France along the way. His sights are set on helping France secure victory in the Euros next summer, but his immediate focus remains on Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League title.

“Because we have the experience of last season, of course, we are better. Maybe we can go one better,” expresses Saliba. He anticipates a more challenging title race but emphasizes the team’s readiness and determination to win every game. His belief in Arsenal’s capabilities extends to the Champions League, setting the bar high for success.

Saliba’s absence last season coincided with a dip in Arsenal’s form and the surrender of their lead in the title race. Far from a case of Arsenal faltering under pressure, Saliba’s absence affected the team’s composure, defensive solidity, and ability to build from the back. Arsenal’s dependence on Saliba is a testament to his transformative impact on the team.

The young defender attributes much of his development to Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, whom he describes as “demanding” and a significant positive influence on his career. The French center-back sees Arteta’s guidance as instrumental in his growth as a player.

As Arsenal eyes success in both domestic and European competitions, Saliba reiterates the team’s targets. “We want to win the Premier League and go as far as possible in the Champions League,” he asserts, highlighting the team’s competitive spirit and commitment to achieving excellence.
