Neymar clears air on Pele comparison after breaking his record

Brazilian striker Neymar, who just scored the brace over the weekend and the country’s 5-1 win over Bolivia in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifier to break the country’s record and become their highest goal scorer ahead of the legendary Pele, has advised against any comparison with the late legend saying it was a dream come true for him to become his country’s record goal scorer.

Pele held the record with 77 goals, and Neymar was leveled up going into the fixture, but it didn’t come quickly as the Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia forward lost a penalty in the 17th minute of the game.

However, a brace in the second half, with one coming just on the hour mark and deep into stoppage time, was enough for Neymar to set a new record that he will likely extend beyond the current 79 goals in 129 games he’s played for the team. The former PSG frontman was delighted with the record but said he never thought he could while thanking his teammates and family for the support.

Very happy. I have no words. I have never imagined reaching this record. I want to make clear that it’s not because I surpassed Pele that I am better than him or any other player on the national team. I have always wanted to make my history write my name in the history of Brazilian football and in the national team. Today, I did it. To my family – that is far away – and to all my teammates here, I thank you all.” Neymar said.

A brace from Real Madrid forward Rodrygo and another goal from Raphinha secured the 5-1 win as Brazil prepares for Wednesday’s clash against Peru.

Brazil dropped Manchester United forward Antony from the squad due to allegations of assaults by his ex-girlfriend and another woman. His place was taken by Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus.
