Manchester City Eyes Rafael Leao for Summer Signing Amid AC Milan Contract Twist

Manchester City has set its sights on a major summer transfer, targeting AC Milan’s Rafael Leao. However, the player’s recent contract extension at the San Siro could complicate matters for the Premier League giants.

Reports from Fichajes suggest that Rafael Leao has emerged as Manchester City’s top target for a significant summer signing. The AC Milan star had already captured the attention of Pep Guardiola, who had included him on his shortlist. However, Leao’s recent contract renewal has added a layer of complexity to any potential transfer.

During the summer, Rafael Leao was effectively off the market due to the contract extension he signed with AC Milan, which ties him to the club until 2028. This new deal includes a substantial release clause, rumored to be around €175 million, a figure that could effectively deter any potential suitors.

The decision for Leao to extend his contract was not taken lightly. AC Milan, recognizing his pivotal role in the team, made every effort to secure his services. Had the 24-year-old decided against this extension, the club would have been obligated to entertain reasonable offers from interested parties.

The interest in Rafael Leao from some of Europe’s top clubs is nothing new. Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Manchester United have all expressed interest in the talented winger. Manchester City had also been keen on acquiring his services, but that interest predates his recent contract extension with AC Milan.

Pep Guardiola, in particular, had identified Leao as a potential addition to bolster his attacking options. Reports suggested that the Manchester City manager had even urged the club’s board to pursue the Serie A winner before he committed to his contract extension.

While Manchester City did make a notable summer signing in Jeremy Doku from Rennes, Guardiola remains keen to strengthen the left-wing position. Rafael Leao is viewed as a valuable addition to provide competition for Jack Grealish and enhance the attacking setup.

AC Milan is under no obligation to entertain offers below Leao’s release clause, and the player’s value is set remarkably high. However, Manchester City possesses the financial capacity to meet such demands, given their strong financial position following lucrative player sales during the summer transfer window.

The ultimate decision on a potential transfer will rest with Rafael Leao and AC Milan. Whether the player is open to a move so soon after extending his contract remains uncertain. Nevertheless, Manchester City’s pursuit of Leao demonstrates their ambition, and if AC Milan decides to part with the talented winger, the Premier League side may be well-positioned to secure his signature.
