Manchester City Edge Watford in League Cup Clash; Chelsea Cruise Through with Nkunku Hat-trick

Just two days after a tense Premier League encounter with Arsenal, Manchester City managed to secure a 2-1 victory against second-tier Watford in the English League Cup. Despite heavy squad rotation, City’s dominance shone through with early goals from Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes at Etihad Stadium.

Doku, one of the few players to feature in both the Arsenal match and this game, opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Seizing on a misplaced back-pass, the Belgian winger calmly slotted the ball home from just inside the box. Matheus Nunes followed with a powerful low strike in the 38th minute, notching his first goal since joining from Wolverhampton last season.

While City manager Pep Guardiola has a strong track record in the League Cup, having won it four consecutive times from 2018, he made it clear that this season’s campaign would serve a different purpose. “We are not going to waste energy on this competition, for sure,” Guardiola said, hinting that he plans to focus more on giving fringe players valuable game time.

Watford managed a late response in the 86th minute through Tom Ince, son of former England international Paul Ince, but it was too little, too late.

Meanwhile, Chelsea stormed into the fourth round with a 5-0 thrashing of League Two side Barrow. French forward Christopher Nkunku was the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick within 75 minutes. Nkunku celebrated his final goal by inflating a blue balloon, a quirky gesture that added flair to an already dominant performance. Chelsea’s other goals came from an own goal and a Pedro Neto tap-in.

Aston Villa, playing against League One team Wycombe, secured a 2-1 win. Emi Buendía opened the scoring in the 55th minute before Jhon Durán converted a penalty in the 85th, continuing his stellar form this season. Wycombe pulled one back late into stoppage time, but Villa held on for the win.

Leicester, after a 0-0 draw with fourth-tier Walsall, triumphed 3-0 in a penalty shootout. Walsall failed to convert any of their penalties, allowing Leicester to advance with minimal fuss.

With other Premier League giants like Liverpool and Arsenal still to play their fixtures, the next round promises further drama as top teams juggle multiple competitions amid a congested calendar.
