La Liga returns after international break

Having enjoyed international football for ten days, watching various football stars doing exploits for their respective nations, it’s only right to revel in the resumption of major football leagues across Europe, notably the Spanish La Liga.

Table toppers Barcelona will be back in action at Girona – a side who did a double in the league over the Balugrana in the last campaign, beating Barca by four goals to two on two different occasions.

Hansi Flick’s side will be buoyed by the electric start to the season, which has seen them score thirteen goals and concede only three in four matches and remain undefiled against major forces in the league.

Girona, on the other hand, will be hoping to find a replica of the start they had last season under the tutelage of Miguel Sanchez after three of their most important players, Artem Dovbyk, Aleix Garcia, and Savio, have moved elsewhere.

The last thing the hosts will want on Sunday is to be on the receiving end of a heavy defeat before their sojourn into European elite club competition kick-starts next week.

Elsewhere, reigning champions Real Madrid, will travel to Real Sociedad who have had an underwhelming start to the campaign with one win in four matches (D1 L2), and a growing list of injured players in the aftermath of Mikel Merino’s transition to Arsenal.

While there are major problems at the back for the Los Blancos, things are looking good for them on the injury front with the return of Jude Bellingham to training.

Real’s title defense hasn’t been totally superb, winning two and drawing the other two in their four matches of the season so far. The two draws came away from home – making it the first time since the 2012-13 campaign in which they failed to win either of their first two league fixtures on the road.

However, their impressive record here will be more than enough motivation for the Carlo Ancelotti’s side as they’ve only lost once in their last five visits to the Reale Arena.
