England skipper Harry Kane has revealed that the Three Lions knew they were going to face a tough test even before kicking a ball in their 1-0 win over Serbia in their opening Euro 2024 fixture at the Arena AufSchalke.
The Three Lions were able to secure all three points thanks to an early 13th-minute goal by Jude Bellingham after the Real Madrid midfielder headed home a Bukayo Saka’s cross.
After that, England struggled to add to the advantage, with the England skipper particularly silent in the first half, while Serbia troubled the England defence all through the second half.
The Bayern Munich frontman said the English players knew it was going to be a tough game, as Serbia pose a lot of threats and have some good players, although he believes they handled the pressure well.
“They will make it a battle for you, and I think we dealt with it really well. There was a spell in the second half where we got camped in our box, and we found it hard to get out, but it was an important win tonight. It’s a tough game. They are a tough team and have good players. We stood up to it well, and it is good to get the three points and [for us] to progress. It’s good that we got the win today.” Kane said.
Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham was awarded the player of the game on the night, and England’s victory put them in the top of Group C after Denmark and Slovenia had drawn earlier on Saturday.
England’s next game is against Denmark next Thursday, while Slovenia faces Serbia in their next group-stage match. Meanwhile, in other Sunday’s games, Wout Werghoust was on target as the Netherlands beat Poland 2-1 while Slovenia drew 1-1 with Denmark.
On Monday, three fixtures will happen as Ukraine faces Romania, France, and Austria and Belgium play Slovakia.
