I don’t focus on that anymore – Lionel Messi says winning titles is more important than breaking goal-scoring records

Lionel Messi has had a glorious career as he has ticked the right boxes. The Argentine has scored hundreds of goals at the International level and also at the club level. However, Messi admitted that breaking goal-scoring records doesn’t excite him anymore and he is more focused on winning big titles.

The Argentine skipper fulfilled his childhood dream of winning the FIFA World Cup as La Albiceleste bested France in the final on penalties.

Meanwhile, Messi had a great run in FIFA World Cup 2022, scoring seven goals and providing three assists. He also scored a goal and provided an assist in the all-important semi-final against Croatia. Messi then scored a brace against France in the final and took his team to a historic win.

Messi left Paris Saint-Germain after spending two years with the Parisians. The 36-year-old has now moved to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. The veteran also had offers from Barcelona and Al Hilal of the Saudi Pro League.

In fact, Messi shared an epic rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo, and the same is expected to continue for a few more years.

On whether breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal-scoring records excite him, Messi said, “No, just a little bit. As I said before, at this stage of my career, I don’t focus on that anymore.

“I focus on what I was able to achieve with Argentina and the club level where I was lucky enough to win important titles like the UCL or Club World Cup, leagues, cups,” he told beIN Sport.

“I was lucky enough to win everything, and that’s really what will remain at the end of my career. Of course, you have the goals and records, but, I think, they are secondary apart from the fact that they are nice recognitions,” he added.

Messi has also confirmed that he won’t take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
