England’s Gareth Southgate unsure of his future following Three Lions exit from the World Cup

England were pretty good at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar as they got knocked out of the tournament in a 2-1 defeat against defending champions France in the quarterfinals.

It was a matter of margins for the Three Lions as Harry Kane failed to convert the second penalty of the night and force extratime. The English talisman blasted the spotkick way over the bar as England lost their best opportunity to restore parity.

Overall England dominated Les Blues and were better than the defending champions on many aspects. However it was in the end due to some margin which saw England get knocked out of the quadrennial tournament.

Just like England’s future, Southgate’s future is also up in the air. The England manager currently wants to stay away from the game as he has decided to take a break believing that a tournament like World Cup demands a lot from the players and the coaches. Therefore he wants to give himself time before making any hasty call.

“These tournaments take a lot out of you, and I need time to reflect. We’ve done that after every tournament and that’s the right thing to do,” Southgate shared when asked about his future following England’s quarterfinal exit.

He shares how he does not want to be proven wrong after 4-5 months down the line. “I don’t want to be four, five months down the line thinking I’ve made the wrong call. It’s too important for everybody to get that wrong, ” He added.

Southgate has been one of the most honest and open head coach in the world. The experienced tactician told earlier that he would like to return to club management following his England role, as this was his aim once he moves away from the England role.

It is understood that the FA and the English players want Southgate to stay at least till the Euros in 2024 which is scheduled to be held in Germany.

The experienced tactician took England to their first World Cup semifinals in 28 years back in 2018 in Russia. The Three Lions then reached the finals of the Euros where they lost the big clash against Italy on penalties.

Southgate signed a contract with the FA earlier and that will keep him till the end of the European Championships in Germany on 2024.
