Edinson Cavani Announces Uruguay Retirement Ahead of Copa America 2024

Uruguayan football legend Edinson Cavani has announced his retirement from international football just before the upcoming Copa America 2024 in the United States. This unexpected decision marks the end of a storied international career that saw Cavani become one of Uruguay’s most celebrated footballers.

Cavani also played for top clubs like Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United during his stellar career. For Uruguay, he amassed 136 appearances and 58 goals from 2008 to 2022. His final match for the national team was during the Qatar World Cup in 2022.

Expressing his gratitude and emotions in a heartfelt message, Cavani wrote, “My beloved Celeste, I just want to thank you for every lesson you gave me under your process. I won’t take long. Today my words are few but profound. Thanks to every single person who was a part of this road over the years. I was and always will be blessed to have worn this jersey representing what I love most in this world, my country.”

Reflecting on his journey, he added, “They were without doubt so many wonderful years. I have a thousand things to say, tell and remember, but I want to dedicate today to this new stage of my career and give everything I’ve got to where I’m supposed to be now.”

Cavani’s international career kicked off in spectacular fashion when he scored on his debut in a 2-2 draw against Colombia in 2008. His prowess and natural talent quickly established him as a key figure in Oscar Tabarez’s Uruguay revolution.

Tabarez’s system, known as the ‘Proceso de Institucionalización de Selecciones y la Formación de sus Futbolistas,’ aimed to create a consistent and effective training methodology across all national teams, from the Under-15s to the Senior squad.

Under this system, Uruguay achieved significant milestones, including a fourth-place finish at the FIFA World Cup in 2010 and a Copa America victory in 2011. Cavani’s contributions during this period solidified his place among the country’s football greats, alongside Diego Godin and Luis Suarez.

Over his 15-year tenure with the national team, Cavani participated in four FIFA World Cups and five Copa America tournaments. His 58 goals make him Uruguay’s second-highest scorer, surpassed only by Suarez. His 136 appearances place him third in the all-time list, trailing only behind Godin and Suarez.

Cavani’s last goals for Uruguay came in a friendly match against Panama on June 11, 2022. In that game, he scored twice, leading his team to a 5-0 victory. These goals marked the end of his prolific scoring record for the Celeste, leaving fans with unforgettable memories of his performances.

As Uruguay prepares for the upcoming Copa America without one of its most iconic players, the legacy of Edinson Cavani will undoubtedly inspire future generations of footballers. His dedication, skill, and passion for the game have left an indelible mark on Uruguayan football, ensuring that his contributions will be remembered for years to come.
