NBA Fines Rudy Gobert $100,000 for Criticizing Refereeing and Implying Gambling Influence

In a significant move by the NBA, Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert has been handed a hefty $100,000 fine for his comments suggesting unfair officiating and the negative impact of gambling on game outcomes.

This decision, announced on Sunday, comes as a direct consequence of Gobert’s remarks made in the aftermath of the Timberwolves’ contentious 113-104 overtime defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers last Friday.

The fine represents the maximum penalty permissible under the current collective bargaining agreement, a benchmark previously set with the $100,000 fine issued to James Harden, then of the Philadelphia 76ers, for his public trade demand. Gobert’s criticisms targeted referee Scott Foster, particularly after receiving a technical foul in the final moments of regulation for making a ‘money sign’ gesture, a clear jab at Foster’s officiating.

Post-game, Gobert openly addressed his actions and the broader implications for the NBA, stating, “I’ll bite the bullet again. I’ll be the bad guy. I’ll take the fine, but I think it’s hurting our game. I know the betting and all that is becoming bigger and bigger, but it shouldn’t feel that way.”

The NBA’s response was swift and stern, with Joe Dumars, the NBA executive vice president for basketball operations, condemning Gobert’s conduct. The league found Gobert guilty of making “an inappropriate and unprofessional gesture toward a game official,” alongside his public criticism of the officiating. Dumars’ statement also highlighted the decision’s consideration of Gobert’s “past instances of conduct detrimental to the NBA” regarding his history of criticizing officiating.

This is not the first time Gobert has faced repercussions for his public comments, marking his fourth fine for such offenses. The financial implications are significant for Gobert, who is on a $41 million salary for the current season, reiterating the NBA’s firm stance on preserving the integrity of the game and the professionalism expected of its players.
