Former Toronto Raptors Forward Malcolm Miller Signs with Taiwan’s Taipei Taishin Mars

Malcolm Miller, a former member of the Toronto Raptors and an NBA champion, is set to continue his basketball journey overseas. The 31-year-old forward recently signed a deal with Taipei Taishin Mars, a team in Taiwan’s top basketball league. The move marks Miller’s latest chapter in professional basketball after his most recent NBA stint in the 2019-20 season with the Raptors.

Miller’s time in the NBA spanned three seasons, all with the Raptors. His role on the team was largely as a reserve, and he finished his NBA career with averages of 2.0 points per game, shooting an impressive 43.4% from the field and 40.6% from three-point range in 53 regular-season games.

Despite his limited playing time, Miller played a part in the Raptors’ historic run to the 2019 NBA Championship, appearing in 11 playoff games during their successful campaign that culminated in a victory over the Golden State Warriors.

In his final NBA season, 2019-20, Miller appeared in 28 games, averaging 1.3 points per contest while shooting 41.4% from the field and 36.4% from beyond the arc. Although his on-court contributions were modest, his versatility as a forward who could guard multiple positions made him a valuable depth player during his tenure in the league.

Following his NBA career, Miller continued to develop his game in the G League, where he found more success and playing time. Over five seasons in the G League, Miller posted solid numbers, averaging 11.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 45.4% from the field and 37.4% from long distance.

His performances in the developmental league helped keep him on the radar for potential NBA call-ups, although he has now shifted his focus to overseas opportunities.

Miller’s signing with Taipei Taishin Mars was first reported by Alberto De Roa of HoopsHype and later confirmed by the team. The Mars’ head coach, Xu Yingcheng, praised Miller’s versatility, particularly highlighting his defensive prowess and ability to stretch the floor with his shooting. “Coach Xu Yingcheng sees his outside skill and 213 cm arm display, [which] can bring pressure on his opponent on the defensive end,” the team said in a statement (translated to English). “Overall, Miller has the mobility of the third position, also has the defensive power of the fourth position, selfless style, [and] is a team player with good attack and defense.”

Miller’s signing comes as he enters his 30s, a stage in his career where many former NBA players explore opportunities in international leagues. While it seems unlikely that he will return to the NBA, Miller’s experience and skill set will likely make him a key asset for his new team in Taiwan. At 31, Miller still has the chance to carve out a productive and lengthy career in overseas basketball, bringing his championship experience and team-first mentality to a new environment.

Miller’s move to Taipei Taishin Mars signifies his desire to continue playing at a high level while contributing to a team outside of the NBA. For basketball fans in Taiwan, his arrival will be a major attraction, adding international flavour and experience to the domestic league.

With his ability to defend multiple positions and shoot from the perimeter, Miller is expected to make an immediate impact in the Taiwanese league, helping Taipei Taishin Mars compete for championships.
