Blockbuster Karl-Anthony Towns Trade to Knicks Still Pending Finalization

The highly anticipated trade sending Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks is still awaiting official confirmation, despite being reported on Friday.

According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, the trade remains “on track but not completed yet.” The deal, which also involves Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo heading to Minnesota, is expected to be finalized soon but is currently in a holding pattern.

As part of the trade, the Timberwolves will receive a first-round pick from the Detroit Pistons, while the Charlotte Hornets will acquire DaQuan Jeffries and additional draft compensation.

Though the trade is not yet official, it is expected to go through in the coming days, meaning the primary impact of the delay will likely be on media availabilities for the players involved ahead of the upcoming training camp.

The Knicks, in particular, are set to bolster their depth at center with the addition of Towns. With Mitchell Robinson sidelined for the start of the 2024-25 season and Isaiah Hartenstein departing in free agency, Towns will step in as the starting center.

The four-time All-Star brings strong offensive capabilities, having averaged 21.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, and three assists over 62 games for the Timberwolves last season. His ability to produce from the paint and stretch the floor as a shooter should provide a significant boost to the Knicks’ roster.

In exchange, Julius Randle heads to Minnesota, where he will likely assume a key role alongside Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert. Randle, a versatile forward, averaged 24 points, 9.2 rebounds, and five assists in 46 games last season with the Knicks. His experience and playmaking ability could help form a new core for the Timberwolves as they aim to make a deeper playoff push.

Donte DiVincenzo’s inclusion in the deal will also give Minnesota more backcourt options, adding defensive intensity and perimeter shooting to their lineup.

While the delay may be frustrating for fans eager to see how both teams will evolve, the trade is expected to be finalized soon. Once the paperwork is complete, the players will have the chance to address the move publicly and begin preparing for the 2024-25 season in their new uniforms.
